"My Sister's Dementia Journey"

About: Specialist Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Services / Older Adult Community Mental Health Team – Wyre Forest

(as a relative),

Over about 12 months we noticed that our Sister was becoming confused, particularly about arrangements, A family member would arrive to collect for an occasion and she would be out working in the garden having forgotten all about it.

A specialist Nurse from Bewdley Medical Centre came for an informal chat with her, she was then referred to the Adult Community Health Team at Wyre Forest, Worcestershire.

After her first appointment she received a brain scan and at a follow up Appointment with Dr Sinha, we learnt that she had Vascular Dementia and Alzheimer's.

Within a few weeks we were invited to an information morning where we were given information about services available to us and where we could access help and support as a family.

This initial meeting was followed by a 3 hour training session for Family/ friends who would be main Carers. This Sessions was extremely helpful. We learnt best practices in supporting my Sister, what we could expect; how to balance my sister's wishes with ensuring she was safe.

The tutor was a Mental Health Nurse, but also had parents who both had Dementia so he covered the professional and personal aspects of living with dementia and how we could best help and support.

We contacted Age Concern who helped complete forms for Attendance Allowance.

We had a visit from Occupational Health who assessed my sisters home to see if apparatus was needed to enable her to cope more easily and safely.

Following delivery of some equipment, the Occupational Therapist returned to ensure that Equipment was being used correctly and safely.

This process has taken 6 months to date and we cannot speak highly enough of the care and support we have received.

Dr Sinha is delightful, she has the most caring manner of any Medical Professional I know, she took time with my Sister and gave us, her family numerous opportunities to ask questions. Nothing was too much trouble for her.

We have been very impressed and thankful for The Wyre Forest Older Adult Community Mental Health Team. No complaints at all. Top Marks
