"The disgraceful treatment of my mum"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Clinical assessment unit

(as a relative),

My mum, who is terminally ill and was in hospital feeling unwell, was kicked out of her bed because, as she was told by a member of staff, there’s patients in here sicker than you. All of this shouted across the unit for everyone to hear.

I am absolutely appalled and furious of this treatment, how a member of staff can have such a lack of empathy for someone who’s been struggling for months baffles me.

As a result of the extra stress and anger my mum felt, when we eventually got her home she was sick and for someone who’s struggling to eat at the moment just makes things so much worse.

I expect a reply to this complaint, as I will not let this member of staff get away with this. And just to confirm my anger, other members of staff in the ward were shocked at their actions as well. The other staff were lovely, it’s just a shame that one member of staff can tarnish what was a previously good and caring experience.

Dear magpiejs66

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns regarding the care your mother received during her recent stay in the clinical assessment unit. I want to begin by saying how deeply sorry I am to hear about the distressing experience she and your family endured. Please accept my sincere apologies.

What you’ve described is not reflective of the standards of care, compassion, and dignity we expect from our staff. I am particularly concerned by the reported comment made in a public setting, which was not only inappropriate but also deeply disrespectful to your mother at a time when she needed support and understanding.

I am also grateful that you acknowledged the kindness shown by other members of the team. While it is reassuring to know that your mother experienced compassion from others, I fully recognise that one unacceptable interaction can significantly impact a person’s sense of safety and trust in our care.

If you are willing, I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly to offer a more personal apology and to ensure your concerns are fully addressed. Please let me know a convenient time to contact me directly on 01324 567472 or pamela.scott@nhs.scot

Best wishes

pam
