I went to my GP about a mole that had changed. I wasn't too concerned but having skin cancer in the family, I didn't want to take any chances.
My GP referred my to dermatology.
I was seen very quickly and the reception staff couldn't have been more helpful.
I am thankful that my mole was nothing to be worried about. However the doctor I saw was dismissive and made me feel like I had wasted their time as when I was giving some history they finished my sentence, describing me as a worrier.
I however rarely attend my GP or any NHS service, and this was referral via my GP to them. I explained in my appointment this was not the case and that I had just wished to ensure all was fine as there was a strong family history.
It was potentially a comment on my mental health, for which I have been on antidepressants for several years. Either way this comment was unwarranted and unhelpful.
I work within the NHS, and I am aware of the pressures services are under. However I would suggest if the department feel they are getting inappropriate referrals from primary care services, then a quality improvement project is required in regards to GP education and training, and not have patients feel they can't go to their GP with a genuine concern (as well as follow the advice given on the NHS Inform website regarding moles and skin changes).
