"Outpatient Appointment"

About: Lauriston Building / Dermatology

(as the patient),

I went to my GP about a mole that had changed. I wasn't too concerned but having skin cancer in the family, I didn't want to take any chances.

My GP referred my to dermatology.

I was seen very quickly and the reception staff couldn't have been more helpful.

I am thankful that my mole was nothing to be worried about. However the doctor I saw was dismissive and made me feel like I had wasted their time as when I was giving some history they finished my sentence, describing me as a worrier.

I however rarely attend my GP or any NHS service, and this was referral via my GP to them. I explained in my appointment this was not the case and that I had just wished to ensure all was fine as there was a strong family history.

It was potentially a comment on my mental health, for which I have been on antidepressants for several years. Either way this comment was unwarranted and unhelpful.

I work within the NHS, and I am aware of the pressures services are under. However I would suggest if the department feel they are getting inappropriate referrals from primary care services, then a quality improvement project is required in regards to GP education and training, and not have patients feel they can't go to their GP with a genuine concern (as well as follow the advice given on the NHS Inform website regarding moles and skin changes).

Dear warmsr57,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us on Care Opinion.

I am really pleased to hear that your referral was handled promptly, that the reception staff were helpful, and most importantly, that your mole was nothing to worry about.

However, I am sorry to hear that your consultation within the Dermatology Department left you feeling dismissed and unsupported. I can appreciate your concern, especially given your family history, it is entirely understandable that you would want to have it properly assessed. It is disappointing that your experience did not reflect the high-quality, compassionate care that NHS Lothian is committed to providing, and I would like to sincerely apologise for this.

We truly value your feedback, and I want to reassure you that I have passed your comments on to the Dermatology Management Team for review and reflection.

Thank you again for sharing your experience.

Best wishes,

Ana Mezzomo
