"Nice staff, but lack of communication overall"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / General surgery Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I had experienced a missed miscarriage which was a shock. Staff was lovely during my ultrasound, during chat about decisions and over the phone. On the day of my surgery I was put into the treatment room which was fine, however found a little bit odd to be in a treatment room with a random bed wheeled in, however this is understandable as short spaced! I had to wait a long time for someone to talk to us which was understandable. I came out of surgery, the staff have been lovely but I cant lie so many problems, they forgot so many things (bloods taken in theatre they forgot, almost sent me home without an Anti D injection, no food or drink offered) (if i hadn’t listen to previous staff at my pre op appointment I would have left without this!).

Before the surgery the registrar/surgeon came in and automatically some how assumed that I'm in for an abortion, they just assumed that as I'm young and she saw the amount of weeks I was, it really upset me due to the circumstances that I was in for! Where was the communication??😓

Minutes before I was given general anaesthetic the surgeon required my signature (about what to do with babies remains), as I had already been given drugs, I was half aware what I was signing, I found this unprofessional.

The theatre staff on ward 6 couldn’t have been any nicer! Listened and supported me as I cried before and after surgery, asked questions about me to take my mind off of the situation  made me feel amazing! I was so grateful for everything in theatre & recovery!

After surgery, once again communication between staff was nonexistent! I was sat for 4/5 hours without food or water and when asked for it they said that I wasn’t able to have any until doctor told them I can. Before surgery I was told post Op I can eat, drink, do whatever I like as this was a minor surgery and I would go home as soon as anaesthetic wore off. This was delayed due to missed bloods and the almost forgotten anti D injection. I then received food and apologies as the staff spoke to doctor and doctor said I could have eaten hours ago!

On my way out a staff member forgot to give me forms which I required and pregnancy tests to take as per protocol. Once again, if I hadn’t have listened or wasn’t aware what I needed, this would have been forgotten.

They kept repeating thanks for reminding me and that I was doing their job. I work in healthcare myself and I honestly think that if I wasn’t as aware and have listened to everything from all appointments, I would have left without majority of things I required…

The staff in gynaecology was nice, they definitely would have been supportive etc however there was no communication between anyone at all. The lovely staff member I met for my pre op and spoke to over the phone was amazing, I really wish they were working the day I was in for surgery:/

Dear centaurusbs35

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience. I am truly sorry to hear about your recent miscarriage and would like to extend my sincere condolences.

I’m also very sorry that your experience during your care was not as it should have been. While it’s heartening to hear that some staff were kind and supportive, it’s clear that there were several areas where communication and coordination fell short. Your feedback highlights important issues that need to be addressed to ensure patients receive safe, compassionate, and well-organised care.

As Care Opinion is an anonymous platform, I’m unable to reach out to you directly. However, if you feel comfortable discussing your experience further, I would be very happy to speak with you. Your insights are incredibly valuable and could help us improve the service for others.

Please do consider getting in touch with me directly so we can talk through your concerns and explore how we can learn from your experience.

Kind Regards

Jennifer Szotek, Department Manager, Gynaecology Services, FVRH
