"I really feel that the catering needs to be reviewed"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Schiehallion Wards (2a & 2b)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was admitted to Schiehallion Ward 2a for an extended period of time from early 2025 for treatment of AML. During our time I have to say that the food has been awful. For a ward that focuses on nutrition for the kids, the food does not give the kids an incentive to eat, the chips are hard and not cooked, the fish fingers are brick hard and the choice is so repetitive. My daughter doesn't eat anything apart from fruit from the lunch and dinner menus. Nutrition will be even more important when she gets a transplant. But she won't eat and we are not allowed to cook a meal and bring it in so it is going to be really hard to get her where she needs to be nutrition wise.

I really feel that the catering needs to be reviewed. Please do something about this as it will help the children in the ward in the long run and get them back to full fitness. At the moment this is not happening; the amount of trays I see being collected and nothing has been eaten should be in indication that something isn't right.

Dear GD1981

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback, it is greatly appreciated.

I would like to apologise for this aspect of your experience that you have described as this is not the experience and service we would wish for our patients and families.

We currently have a group set up within RHC who are reviewing the catering options and looking to make improvements. I will ensure your feedback is shared with the group as this will be extremely beneficial.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention as it is essential that we provide adequate nutrition for our patients and your feedback will help us to make informed decisions relating to required improvements.

If you would wish to discuss your concerns further, please contact me at emma.mcginlay@nhs.scot

Thank you

Emma
