"compassion and understanding"

About: Roe Valley Hospital

(as a service user),

I had an appointment this morning with Mr. Grimes at Roe Valley Hospital. For a consultant, such appointments may be part of the daily routine. For a patient, however, they can feel unfamiliar, daunting, and at times frightening - especially when the discussion involves the possibility of a renal carcinoma, as it did in my case. My anxiety was such that I attended with both my wife and sister for moral support.

In moments like these, the importance of kindness and understanding cannot be overstated. Mr. Grimes’s natural manner and friendly disposition immediately created an atmosphere of reassurance. While it is essential to be presented with the facts clearly and honestly, the way those facts are delivered matters just as much - if not more - in that moment. Striking that balance between candour and compassion is a rare quality - one that cannot easily be taught but which Mr. Grimes demonstrates instinctively.

This was my second consultation with Mr. Grimes, and on both occasions I found his compassion and understanding just the same.

For that, I am sincerely thankful.
