"Given painkillers that just make me sleepy"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

After seeing my own doctor I have been referred to the Lower Limb Orthopaedic service - I don't need them, or physio, or exercises - what I need is a surgeon to operate - I am in constant severe pain. I have been given painkillers but told these will not help with the pain just make me sleepy!! Advised wear and tear on hips and replacement needed after paying for private costly consultations. I feel the service I received is rubbish!

I am responsible for monitoring overall service delivery, and the day to day running of both departments. I work closely with the Orthopaedic Consultants, Radiologists, Therapists, Trauma Nurse Practitioners, Orthopaedic Practitioners and Nursing staff to ensure cohesive care is delivered. I am very fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff, who work extremely hard to ensure patient safety is maintained, and that clinics run as smoothly as possible.

Dear bracenj77,

I am so very sorry to hear that you are in constant pain and do not feel that you have received the correct treatment.

If you are able to contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (rduh.pals@nhs.net or via telephone 01392 402093), and provide additional information regarding the above, they can contact the appropriate individual to investigate your concern.

Kind regards,

Julia King
