I was given a telephone appointment with a GP here and sadly missed the first call that morning by just a few seconds because I had forgotten to take the phone with me when I went in to another room at home. That was not their fault of course and it had been ringing for a while I just didn't make it in time, but the GP was patient in waiting for someone to pick up before they hung up. I knew a 2nd attempt to call me would be made that day so was sure to keep the phone with me, ringer on top volume and never more than arms reach away. Several hours later (close to 5 hours) the 2nd call finally came in, I reached for my mobile phone which had been ringing for all of 3-4 seconds (if that!) when it suddenly stopped and disconnected! The GP had hung up!
The 'call' attempt was so short I was left wondering if it was an accident, maybe someone walked in while the GP was calling me, maybe nature called and they had to hang up to use the loo and would call back afterwards, who knows but I decided I would call back immediately thinking it surely could not have been the 2nd attempt?! How could it be if they only rang for a couple of seconds? Not allowing anytime for someone to pick up and answer the phone or mute the TV or take it off charge etc. Impossible! I waited for 15 mins on hold to get through to the receptionist who confirmed that was indeed the 2nd call and the GP would not be calling back and that I would have to make another appointment.
If a fair attempt had been made like the first call that morning that rang for some time before hanging up, I would have no complaint! It would totally be my fault for missing the call, but allowing just a few seconds for anyone to pick up the phone before hanging up is completely unprofessional. I feel that they had no intention of giving be a chance to answer the second call and just gave me a quick 2-3 second ring so they could say that they had tried... and left it at that. I think that if that wasn't the case then they would have rang for longer than the few seconds that I got or at the very least have waited long enough for it to go to voicemail which takes about 20 seconds. This experience was absolutely appalling, frustrating and infuriating! I think it is insulting to all and any patients here to be treated with such disregard and what an insult to me personally and my intelligence and integrity too!
