I was unfortunately a patient in A&E at Lincoln recently. There were A LOT of patients compared to the amount of staff that were working, which I completely appreciate, but throughout the night I asked for pain relief on 4 separate occasions and did not receive any.
The nurses seemed to be bringing regular pain relief to patients who were not requesting it, however I and a gentleman opposite me were politely asking for pain relief and never received any.
I was also told that I would have IV fluids prescribed and these were never put up.
I also feel as though there was a big lack of communication. I arrived at about 6pm, had bloods and cannulated at around 10pm, then nothing until around 9am when I was moved to Surgical SDEC. I was under the impression that I was waiting in A&E to see a doctor/bloods review etc for 18 hours, but it was then evident that they were just waiting for SDEC to open.
However this was not communicated to me, which would have alleviated some confusion over why my wait time was so high compared to everyone else, after my initial triage with the A&E nurse I did not have any other contact with a professional until SDEC the next morning, which left me unsure what was going on. While also in a considerable amount of pain due to the lack of pain relief.
Additionally, the chairs are incredibly uncomfortable. Unsure why the staff were trying desperately to get patients out of wheelchairs to prevent pressure injuries when they were actually probably better off in the wheelchairs. Awful chairs, I could feel the metal frame, not suitable for the long waits.
"A&E long waits and short staffing, no pain relief"
