During my visit to A and E and Neustadt ward I felt like communication between the team was very poor. I had gone in with my type 1 diabetes being high due to a malfunction in a refillable insulin pen causing me to not have insulin for more than 24hr and the whole time I had to keep explaining to everyone I saw about what had happened and each and every doctor other than the diabetes team made me feel so belittled by telling me I needed to change my care plan and dosages and that being there was basically due to lack of care on my behalf even though my diabetes is very well managed.
Alongside this nobody who attended to me would fully listen and let me explain my dosages as not a single one understood carb counting which was essential for my medication. I was on multiple occasions told that I was wrong and that no the dose of insulin I was given was adequate to my needs when it was not it. For example, I had explained that for evening meals I would take a dosage of 1 unit of insulin to 10g of carbohydrates which for example if I was to have one slice of toast it would have been 2 units of insulin due to it being 20g of carbs per slice. Furthermore I was cut off when explaining correction dosages and how they work different to my daily meal dosages. So this lead to my sugars being 27 and me only being issued 2 units of insulin rather than the 7 units which I would have needed to put my sugars back in the safe zone, in addition to this the staff member who brought me the medication proceeded to challenge me on my ability to give the injection to myself and argued where the appropriate location on my body was, to where I should inject.
Due to a misunderstanding of dosages when on the ward I was just provided the insulin pen with a needle which was too small and told to sort my dosages myself and inform a staff member after administering a dose, not once did anyone help with the carb portions within the food provided and I had to use my own sources (a food tracking app) to work out the carbs, when I told the doctor this they were only interested in finding out if it was an NHS app and proceeded to tell me I wasn't carb counting appropriately.
Once on the ward a staff member had asked for my dosages again, but this time proceed to assume the carb ratios were an insulin sliding scale of 1-10 units, when I told them that wasn't right they replied saying that yes it is, and it doesn't matter as it's right. Before being discharged I was given the wrong insulin pen and it was myself who questioned this and got it changed otherwise it would have gone unnoticed.
