"BCH Canteen staff going the extra mile"

About: Belfast City Hospital

(as a service user),

I am a patient in the city hospital Belfast and have been here a month now and will be in for a further month or so. After a while, you get a bit fed up of the menu options that are offered on wards for the daily meals.

It can difficult for me to leave the ward due to my treatment, but have a couple of hours free in the late afternoon and most days take a little walk to the canteen to have something to eat that appeals to me more. However, due to the timings I miss the lunch time in the canteen and usually only make it down for after 4pm when food selection is limited.
Dorothy, who works in the canteen, saw how much I was enjoying my trips down in the afternoon (and the pizza baguettes which are usually sold out at this time) and so goes above and beyond to think of me and keep me a pizza aside from lunch, so that there is one waiting for me when I come down at 4pm. This may seem really minimal, but as someone who is in hospital due to stomach issues and trying to gain weight, it really means a lot to me that she keeps me something I can enjoy when I come to the canteen. Dorothy is very caring and considerate, as are the whole canteen staff, so being greeted every day by them and the offer to heat up my pizza really makes my day and gives me a lift, which is so important for keeping my spirits up during difficult treatment.
So I just wanted to thank Dorothy, and the team, for being so nice to and friendly to me as being in hospital for so long can be really difficult. Getting to eat something you enjoy (like the pizza) goes a long way in making your stay a little better, so I am very grateful for the kindness shown to me. Every day I look forward to my break in treatment when I can leave the ward and head to the canteen, because of the lovely staff (especially Dorothy).
