"Learning each other"

About: Arbroath Infirmary / Community Midwifery Unit

(as the patient),

My breastfeeding journey has not been easy, day 1 baby hadn't fed all day not for lack of trying so we were back into the Arbroath maternity unit. We met with Kimberly, the lactation consultant, and he latched ok in the ward but not when we got home. Kimberley gave us a loan of a pump to take home so that I could express.

We were then advised by Lisa to try nipple shields, bought the wrong size and my poor nips ended up blistered. So for the next week it was expressed milk and bottles. During this time both Lisa and Kimberly went on holiday and went to received support from Jane in the unit.

From week 2 we have been using correct fitting nipple shields and the wee man loves it. We are now week 9 and are still working with Kimberly to wean off them as there is no reason for them to be used at present.

Both Kimberly and Jane have offered up home visits to practice latch techniques. And Kimberly, if we haven't met with her at the breast buddy group, will call weekly to ensure we are getting on ok.

Being a first time mum I panicked a bit in the beginning when baby didn't latch straight away, but with the help of the ladies listed above our breastfeeding journey didn't end there.

Kimberley made me realise that me and baby need to learn each other, and it's a process!

Thanks to all
