"Food in A&E/ARU"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Acute Receiving Unit (Units 1-5)

(as a service user),

It's easy to see why there is such negative feelings towards the food provision by NHS GGC. They can go on about everything they do and the partners they have that go into hospitals, but it still doesn't solve the issues. The food when leaving the cook freeze site might be top notch but thats where it stops from my experience.

Tea/Coffee - Tea is stewed and coffee is cold so that sugar doesn't dissolve and you get a sugary hit at the end. No fruit juice available. It took over 6 hours to be provided with a jug of water when arriving on ARU. Tea/Coffee is served in plastic cups with a plastic holder as if its the 90's.

Lunch - options rattled out so fast nobody has chance to understand what is available. All the sandwiches are bought in and are stale/dry, mediocre and not pleasant. I wasn't told what the soup was but it was a bowl of something with no taste with some gelatinous blobs in it. The salt sachet had about 4 grains of salt. No pudding offered for lunch. No fruit juice offered. Was told that only soup and sandwich given for lunch.

Dinner - again, options rattled off so quickly, had to ask to repeat. Was given 4 meatballs, 2 were scolding hot and the other 2 were cold in the middle. The sauce or gravy was cold. The mashed potato was overly starchy and tasted like smash or rehydrated potato and it was cold. There was carrots which were instantly cold. No other food offered. Nothing before the main meal and everyone automatically got ice cream which if you read the ingredients was 90% UPF and about 10% real ingredients. No hot pudding offered.

Asked several times throughout the day on different days including at meal times about fresh fruit but apparently there was none.

Absolutely shocking. I'm sure the food leaving the original site is lovely, but its certainly not like that when its plopped in front of you.

Dear columbamh76

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us.
We’re really sorry to hear that the food and drink provision during your stay didn’t meet your expectations.

Please accept our sincere apologies for the delay in receiving water, the lack of fresh fruit, and the issues with food temperature and presentation. These are important aspects of patient care, and we’re grateful you’ve taken the time to highlight them.

We understand how much mealtimes can impact how patients feel during their stay, and we are committed to improving this.

Thank you

Nicole
