My stepfather was admitted to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy in August. The hospital was 500 miles and 9 hours away from where I live. He was admitted with delirium, after a battle with his GP and a Paramedic who thought he was ok to leave at home. On my request, a second GP assessed him and had him conveyed to hospital.
During the 4 weeks he was at Victoria Hospital, he was fluctuating from being chased by gunmen, to normal conversations. It was very unsettling for him, me and the staff.
After four weeks it was deemed that he did not need an acute bed and he was transferred to Glenrothes Hospital. The change caused more confusion, but when I visited him a few days later he seemed to be on the up. Unfortunately, this improvement did not last.
All the staff were so understanding of his erratic behaviour - sitting at the Nurses Station where he was working. Sitting in the Drs office telling her how to do her job. Regular wandering and telling other patients off…. We know he was certainly a character.
All staff at every level were so kind and caring. We are very grateful to each and every one.
Unfortunately, he got to the stage where he refused to take any medication orally and pulled out his cannula. Within a few days he succumbed to infections that his body was too weak to overcome. It was the right time for him.
Throughout my stepfather's stay, staff were so understanding and kept me informed. They were always able to take my calls and did all they could. Thank you, Ward 2. You were all amazing.
