"A frustrating experience"

(as a service user),

Sent up from A and E, my wife was in extreme pain - partly from a UTI that was found by gynae but not communicated a month before and an ongoing issue this department were trying to deal with.

My wife was sent up on a bed after been given a cannula and fed morphine pain relief.

She was removed from the bed and asked to sit in a chair in a freezing cold room. There she sat for 8 hours with no offer of water or food or indeed if she needed the toilet at all. She had to ask several times for pain relief as the morphine wore off.

She eventually received an examination which was really sore. The staff member left and did not return.

I would say this is a one off, but it happened one month before when this department didn't communicate the UTI. She was left in the same room with no offer of water or food.

We were asked to come back the next morning after leaving to go home at late at night. When we turned up the staff member that saw us had no idea that we had been in gynae the day before, clearly this had not been communicated on the notes. It was like we had to start again... And so the wait commenced. We had to wait behind other patients.

This is so frustrating I can see how the NHS is struggling there is simply no joined up thinking.

To say that the situation was unsatisfactory would be an understatement.

Dear slidech73

My name is Denise Marshall, I am the Senior Charge Nurse for the Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy Outpatient Service within Ninewells Hospital.

Thank you taking the time to feedback you and your wife's experience.

I think that we may have had a discussion during your wife's attendance within the Gynaecology Assessment Unit the other day.

I am sorry that your wife and you have had the experiences you describe. I can assure you that your concerns have been taken seriously and that I will look into them further, sharing what we discussed and this post with the whole team to increase their awareness of what matters to patients and their relatives. If it was yourself I spoke with, you are right in what you said, the most important thing is to treat everyone the way you would want yourself or your loved ones to be treated.

I would encourage you and your wife to make contact with our Patient Feedback Team and raise this all formally, so that we can provide a full and clear response to what we have found and what changes have been made.

If you or your wife would like to speak with me directly, you can email me on denise.marshall@nhs.scot, and if you leave a contact number and a convenient time to call you I will arrange this.

Again, I am truly sorry.

Kind Regards

Denise Marshall, Senior Charge Nurse, Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy Outpatient Services
