"Outrageous urgent waiting times"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I was shocked to learn that the outpatients waiting times for urgent referrals now sits at 13 months.

Previously my GP had sent a referral requesting that I be reinstated at the point I was at previously. Despite me following my GP’s instruction to the letter, which included phoning my consultant’s secretary to explain what had happened, I got no follow up call as promised and I was never advised that the referral had been rejected. In fact, it took about 7 weeks for me to find out that the referral had been rejected.

This led to my GP refusing to write another referral (my 3rd) should it, too, be rejected.

This led to another delay in getting the referral sent.

I’m now at the bottom of a 13 month waiting list. I was discharged without further follow up after a diagnosis was made. I understand that that consultant has now retired.

But what now? Does that mean that the previous diagnosis is invalid and now I need to have the entire thing reinvestigated? Or can a new consultant pick up at the point the previous one left me and prescribe me medication.

My GP has already told me, more than once, that he cannot prescribe me any appropriate medication as some of symptoms are beyond what he can investigate at practice level.

I don’t understand at all why I was discharged. I was advised via a 3rd party (My MP) that due process was followed. I’ve no idea what that means.

Hi AD2022

My name is Paul McCarthy and I am the Service Manager for Gynaecology in the Belfast Trust.

I'm sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied with your experience in the Gynaecology Services at the Belfast Trust and I would like to apologise that our waiting times are longer than we would like, due to the demand on the service.

I can advise that with the help of funding made available through the Minister for Health's Elective Care Reform Plan, we are actively working on reducing our waiting times through increased capacity internally and also with the support of Independent Sector Providers.

If you have an individual issue that you would like me to respond to please contact the Trust on the following e-mail address info@belfasttrust.hscni.net and I will be very happy to investigate any concerns you have.

Kindest regards

Paul

Update posted by AD2022 (the patient)

My MP was told twice that I couldn’t be reinstated as it would affect other patients on the waiting list, adversely.

However, via a Freedom of Information request, I found out that several review appointments & new patient appointments were recorded as Did Not Attend in September 2025 in general gynaecology at The Belfast Trust. Additionally the Urgent waiting list is now currently more than a year.

Thankfully after support from my MP & The Patient Client Council, I’m now being seen in a few days in the private sector (via the NHS). When I explained I’d had a poor experience previously & I was feeling rather anxious, as I was booking the appointment, they were really kind & helpful. They were very reassuring & told me they put support in place for their patients. Happily, they did not tell me to go to my GP. They were knowledgable about the consultant I’ll be seeing & told me what to expect during the appointment in terms of procedures & examinations that would be carried out.

I’m very grateful to be getting seen so soon, so Thank You for referring me & I’ve cancelled an appointment at a private clinic I’d made. The wait for that appointment was over 8 months.
