"The operation was brilliant"

About: Trauma & orthopaedics / Orthopaedic National Treatment Centre

(as the patient),

I had to get a hip replacement because I was in terrible chronic pain for years. I waited for 2 years in NHS Lothian before they offered me a place at the national treatment centre Kirkaldy,

I was extremely apprehensive as it wasn't at a large hospital and I was already nervous about the procedure. However after the initial consultation and x-rays, blood tests etc, I felt a lot better, it is a brand new building, the staff were great and my consultant Mr Rehman put me at ease.

I was then given an appointment. However I got a phone call about a cancellation and was seen 3 weeks quicker. On the day I went through for 7 had a couple of hours of prep where everything was checked thoroughly and then on a Wednesday morning I was wheeled away for the operation.

I had a private room to convalescence and there was a plethora of nurses on hand to deal with things. From providing pain relief to making sure I could walk with an aid. My son was allowed in to visit and chat to me and then wheel me outside for some fresh air.

The operation was brilliant. I went in Wednesday morning and came out Thursday night. Mr Rehman and his staff are a credit. Before leaving all the changes to my medicine were written down on my discharge letter with dates marked. For instance when I would finish my blood thinners. The nurse then went over it all with my son who had come to take me home.

My other hip needs replaced too and I feel so fortunate  am able to get it done in Kirkaldy again. They looked after me, get me informed , let me choose if I wanted local or general anaesthetic and listened to all my concerns as I was very nervous.

I'm now feeling much more relaxed about the second procedure and I can't thank them enough for all they did for me.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to provide this valuable feedback, about your recent stay at the National Treatment Centre. All patient feedback is appreciated. We use this information to reflect on current practices and work as a team to make positive changes, to improve patient care and outcomes.

Attending for surgery can be very daunting and stressful. Understandably you would have felt apprehensive and nervous about attending for surgery, especially out with your local area. Therefore, it is so rewarding to know that the team settled these nerves and put you at ease.

I am pleased to know that the operation went well and nursing staff managed you pain effectively.

The discharge process is a very important aspect in nursing care. We want all patients to feel safe, and supported on discharge, to enhance recovery at home. Therefore, I am pleased you found this process well managed and that staff took the time to explain your medication changes and discharge letter with you and your son.

I will share your kind words with Mr Rehman and the team and I am sure they will be delighted with your feedback.

I hope you are recovering well, following your hip replacement.

Best wishes and take care,

Briony Klos
