Called NHS 24 as my baby was showing signs of aspiration - they sent us straight to A&E.
On arrival I was told it could be an 8 hour wait, I explained my baby was in respiratory distress and surely this would be triaged and he would be seen quicker. I was told I have no qualifications to have that opinion and someone with medical qualifications would decide (I’m unsure how a member of staff would know my qualifications? They were so rude!)
Luckily and gratefully, a nurse took us straight through. The A&E consultant came through and continued to tell me my baby's breathing was normal and I just hadn’t had a baby before to know. Again, I am aware what respiratory distress looks like. He was struggling to breathe and unable to swallow. The consultant continued to try send us home, I refused. I know my baby. Luckily when checking his oxygen levels, this showed there was an issue as they had dropped to well below normal. We were then rushed through to resus on oxygen and the consultants came down from peads and they took over his care. He was in for 3 days on IV antibiotics and then sent home with a weeks orals.
As a mother this is stressful enough, but to come across such a rude member of staff (who has zero medical qualifications) and to then be told I’m overreacting and there’s nothing wrong with my baby, is shocking.
My baby almost died when I had a placenta abruption and again I was not believed there was something wrong and they sent me home. I ended up having a cat 1 emergency c section under GA because I was dismissed. To then have my child's life played with again is beyond me.
I am appalled and had my child not made it, it would have been on their hands.
