My frustration stems from the severe and alarming disconnect between the urgency communicated by the National Health Service (NHS) and the reality of appointment availability at the primary care level.
The NHS has rightly intensified its campaign to increase MMR uptake, which I support. The UK failed to meet herd immunity objectives and in my opinion, this is a huge risk. This campaign has included highly emotive and often alarming communications, such as texts and letters, sent directly to households, effectively creating a sense of immediate need and parental responsibility.
However, when I acted upon this urgent messaging and contacted my local GP surgeries - Longview Medical and Roby Medical near the L36 Huyton area - the service failed entirely to meet the urgency it promoted. Despite the push for immediate action, the soonest appointment any of the offices could offer was nearly a month later.
We were initially registered with Longview who were unable to give us dates. We separately had issues where they were unable to provide an appointment to investigate a potentially urgent health concern my husband had, for nearly a week.
We later moved to Roby where it seems that flu shots take priority over baby jabs, and the nearest date they had was over three weeks after the call.
I find it unacceptable that the system uses such insistent and concerning public health messaging, letters, posters, emails sent out via nursery, without ensuring that the primary care infrastructure is in place to support the resulting demand immediately. This failure undermines public trust and risks delaying necessary protection for children.
My baby is born on the 7th most common day of the year - September babies. So I cannot be the only mother due these vaccines that is unable to access them. I even changed GP to try and be seen.
