"Amazing care - empathy, expertise and understanding"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Acute Medical Unit

(as the patient),

I am currently receiving inpatient care for viral meningitis.

To confirm the diagnosis - I needed a lumbar puncture and I was extremely nervous about this. Doctor Gemma was exceptional, as were Barney the FY1 and Lucy the student Doctor.

Gemma explained everything in such detail, with no rush, no question was silly, no fear absurd.. she was really professional and understanding.

The procedure itself wasn’t pleasant but I truly believe I had the best care and attention and it felt like Gemma had done a 1000 of them before. I felt in safe hands throughout. Lucy held my hand throughout and it made all the difference. She’ll make an excellent doctor one day soon and hopefully never forgets the basics of sharing that you care.

Overall - an experience that could have been a lot worse and with the team I had around me, I felt as if I was the luckiest patient in the hospital that day.
