"We feel we've been badly let down"

About: Mental Health / Community Mental Health Team

(as a parent/guardian),

Our daughter has a chronic psychotic mental health condition which started in early adulthood over twenty years ago.

She's been on mood stabilising medication  for years which were suddenly stopped and her compulsory treatment order was also stopped without a reason being given to our daughter or myself. As I'm her main carer and named person, I feel I should have been told why this was being done. I found out later it was because our daughter missed some appointments at the clinic and home visits with the nurse and hadn't signed some forms. Again I wasn't informed about these forms.

Within a few days of this medication being stopped our daughter became unwell and continued to deteriorate  becoming very paranoid, aggressive and had  uncontrollable anger towards everyone and anyone she came into contact with.

We contacted the mental health team and crisis team who dismissed this as just bad behaviour. Eventually she was seen by  a locum psychiatrist  who  told her she had to take contraceptive medication before her mood stabilisers could be given again. She attended to this immediately and her medication was commenced.

However, she was still unwell and had to be hospitalised as she was neglecting herself and her home. She is quieter now but still very angry and aggressive towards family and others and continues to be more paranoid than usual.

We feel we've been badly let down.

Dear victorcm93

My name is Sheena Smith and I'm the Senior Manager for Mental Health and Recovery within East Renfrewshire. I'm very sorry to hear about the recent experience of both you and your daughter and the impact it has had on her mental health. We always aim to work collaboratively with our patients and their carers and families and it is disappointing to hear this has not been your experience. If you feel it would be helpful I would be happy to meet with both yourself and your daughter to reflect on your experience and take steps to address the issues you have raised.

I can be contacted on 0141 800 7840 and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind Regards

Sheena Smith
