"Discussion after a growth scan"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Maternity

(as the patient),

I was contacted by a consultant to discuss my growth scan. My baby is measuring at over 4kg at 40 weeks.

I felt the call was pushy toward being induced, my personal preferences weren’t heard. It felt like a scaremongering call as a pose to discussing the risks and the options. Risks were talked about but not actual risk. My personal attributes - height, weight, move towards the fact that this isn’t a very large baby for me.

It was a very upsetting phone call and left me feeling confused and anxious.

Dear ospreyfp84

I am very sorry to hear that you have been left feeling upset, confused or anxious after this phone call with a consultant.

We strive to always take into consideration peoples personal preferences and personalise care accordingly. We all should be taking into consideration your individual risk when discussing inductions.

Can I suggest speaking with your lead midwife in community to discuss further the risks and benefits of induction. We also have a good decision aid around large for dates babies and inductions. This could be sent to you through your mychart app for you to consider your options. It might be worth discussing with your midwife other alternatives and using the BRAIN decision tool to think about these. A stretch and sweep could be offered as an example alternate option to induction.

If you wish to speak further about this please email Hazel.duckworth@nhs.net

thankyou
