"Paramedics & patient care"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I had dreadful pain in left hand side/back, husband phoned for ambulance, arrived in 30 minutes. Paramedics Finn and Kirsten were compassionate and professional, taken to Wishaw Hospital. Waited in ambulance for 9 hours, shift changed then Siobhan and partner took over, she was so friendly and reassuring, kept going in to see when I was likely to be admitted.

After 9 hours told being diverted to Monklands, said no, an hour later, admitted to A&E, bay 14. Nurse Chi Chi excellent, took bloods, blood pressure, ECG, then had CT Scan. Doctor said I could be admitted for pain management but decided to go home at 7.a.m. Said come back if pain returned or go to Out of Hours/GP.

On getting into car to go home, Siobhan came out of waiting ambulance to see how I was. So caring. Unfortunately pain returned 48 hours later, phoned 111, asked to come to Out of Hours, Hamilton. Again treatment was excellent, thoroughly examined, looked at scan and diagnosed Diverticulitis, given antibiotics, again told to come back/go to A&E, GP if symptoms don't improve in 48 hours. All in all NHS at it's best, except for A&E wating time.

Dear Anne47,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your recent experience. I’m truly sorry to hear about the pain you endured, and I hope you're now feeling more comfortable and on the mend.

It’s heartening to hear how compassionate and professional our staff were throughout your journey — from the paramedics Finn and Kirsten, to Siobhan and her partner, Nurse Chi Chi, and the team at Hamilton Out of Hours. Your kind words will mean a great deal to them, and I’ll make sure your feedback is passed on to everyone involved.

I also want to acknowledge the long wait you experienced in the ambulance. We understand how difficult that must have been, and I appreciate your patience and understanding during what was clearly a challenging time.

Your message is a powerful reminder of the dedication and care our teams strive to provide every day, even under pressure. Thank you again for your thoughtful note — it means a lot to all of us.

I wish you a smooth and full recovery.

Best wishes,

Julie.
