I had discovered a hernia back in May. It was decided at some point that i’d need surgery. I was a bit nervous even though I was told it’d be a minor procedure. I was given the right information about what the surgery would involve, risks, etc.
The check in opened on time at 7:30am. We were called by names and guided to a waiting area. We were informed that it could take up to 6hrs to be taken to the theatre. But we were given water and nurses run some tests on us: blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels, etc.
I was called by the anaesthetist (Sam) who asked me a series of questions about conditions I might have, allergies, medications, etc. He was very patient and professional. So was all the staff at the check in area, nurses, waiting room staff. It made the whole experience a relaxing one.
I was taking to a cubicle with a sofa and a bed where I could change to a gown. One of the nurses gave me a special underwear garment so I could remove my underwear. When taken to the theatre I met dr. Zara (sorry I missed her surname) another nurse in red and Sam the anaesthetist. They “connected” me to all the things I had to be “connected” to. That’s when I realised it’s after all, a minor but serious, surgery. They made me feel safe at all times. Thank you.
When I woke up I requested my phone so I could contact my family and my responsible adult. A nurse brought it to me promptly. I was given a nice cheese sandwich. Nurse Jane, I believe that was her name, helped me to stand up and walk for a bit. She gave me further instructions for my recovery. She was very sweet and patient. Thank you.
Finally Dr Wei came to have a brief chat with me. He was responsive and patient to answer my questions. Thanks to him too.
Big thanks to the NHS. For the following weeks I won’t be able to work which means I won’t have an income but knowing that my quality of life will be improved by this surgery that has been publicly funded gives me a piece of mind. That’s for me, the most important part of this experience: knowing the importance of the NHS as a publicly funded institution. Thanks for reading.
