"Urology waiting list"

About: Western General Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

I was recently in seeing my consultant regarding reoccurring kidney stones and was added to an emergency waiting list on any of the 4 consultants lists or as a last minute patient to be contacted if there was a cancellation, this was now over 2 months ago. I have since been admitted into hospital through A&E for 5 days, on an IV infusion for severe dehydration and my kidney function was extremely low.

Whilst being admitted, they could not understand why I was in pain on my left side when my stone is on my right (causing me no pain at all) but they did not have certain answers and diagnosed me with radiated pain on my left from my stone on the right.

I have tried contacting the consultant as well as the waiting list, who I managed to speak with and advised of the above and also mentioned that I have not received a letter or a message to say that I have been added to a list, the person on the phone seemed very much interested in my concerns and said that there was no such thing as an emergency list and I would have to just wait in date order for my appointment regardless of my situation or the pain I am in, or the daily struggles I have trying to manage the pain.

I spoke with my GP who have been continuing to monitor my bloods and are concerned that I have not heard nothing back yet and have since written yet another referral letter to urology.

It just seems that staff at the WGH urology offices have no concerns what patients go through or the pain that they are in, I wish I took the member of staff's name who I spoke with as they could not have been any more rude.

Just a pity that people are in genuine pain and really need to be seen but those sitting in offices have the power to disregard that, would probably be different if it was one of their own!

Dear listenzz78,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us on Care Opinion.

I am so sorry to hear about the challenges you have faced and the distressing circumstances you have had to endure while waiting for treatment. It is also very disappointing to hear that your interaction with a member of staff from the Urology Department left you feeling dismissed and unheard. This does not reflect the standard of care our services aim to provide, and I sincerely apologise for your experience.

I have passed your feedback on to the Urology Management Team at the Western General Hospital for appropriate review. If you feel it would be helpful for your concerns to be formally investigated, please do not hesitate to contact the Patient Experience Team, either by email loth.feedback@nhs.scot or by telephone 0131 536 3370 (Mon-Fri, 9am-2pm) and a member of the team will be more than happy to assist you.

Thank you again for sharing your story, and I truly hope you receive the care and support you need very soon.

Best wishes,

Ana Mezzomo
