"Think consent should be asked at the time of check in"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I wasn't asked if I was ok with a student doctor and student nurse being present during the procedure.

So I was called into the room by the nurse and the Consultant was sitting down and introduced the student doctor and then went straight onto the questions.

The room at the North Devon Hospital is tiny with no windows, so whilst on the bed undressed from waist down there were 5 of us crammed in. I felt completely overwhelmed like I was on the verge of a panic attack.

The nurses were lovely and the student doctor looked embarrassed throughout. But having 4 healthcare staff around me during a Hysterscopy with local anaesthetic that made me really shivery/shaky was not pleasant.

I was then asked if I always responded like this! I assume they meant shaky/shut down due to the consultant not being able to do the procedure easily as I have a tilted cervix, so many attempts were made to get the needle through. And feeling claustrophobic due to the windowless room, probably a storage cupboard at some point in the buildings history!

Anyway the nurses were great I just think consent should be asked at the time of check in, you shouldn't have to walk in and be confronted with 4 staff as I felt too embarrassed/surprised to say who are these people and I don't want them there.

Dear skyss96

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your feedback.

All feedback is so valuable to us so that we gain a good insight into patient experiences.

I am really sorry that you were not asked if the medical student and student nurse could be present during your procedure. The rooms we use are indeed very small and because of this we try to ensure there are not too many people present and keep students to a minimum. We would routinely have 3 nurses in the room as well as the Consultant. This can feel very crowded and I apologise for this and understand that you felt overwhelmed.

I am glad you felt the nurses looked after you - I will feed this back to the team but I will also ask them to ensure that patients are fully informed of who will be in the room prior to entering.

I hope you have recovered well from your procedure.

Best wishes

Louise
