"Staff Judgement of Suicide / Self Harm"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

Went into triage and the nurse did not even look at me. They went through the motions and asked what happened. When I told them, they asked if I was trying to kill myself, really abruptly and out of nowhere. I felt they were so judgemental, instead of helping they acted as though I was an inconvenience. I shut down and did not want to speak to them anymore so I just muttered. I barely got seen and when I did the staff I saw were acting rudely and judgemental to the fact this was a “self inflicted” illness. I did not get seen to, even when going into abnormal heart rhythms.

I moved up to the ward where the nurses were absolutely lovely and attentive, especially the student nurse who took the time and care to look after every individual patient, she was exceptional.

However, from going in at 10pm I did not get to see a psychiatrist until 4pm, even though I was promised that I would be seen before 3pm and this was just due to them “losing me” in their system. When I did get to see a psychiatrist it turned out to be a mental health nurse, not a psychiatrist and they did not ask any personal questions, just checking off boxes on their list with no care. I did not want to speak to them after this whole ordeal and just tried to go home as soon as possible.

After this experience I have had to deal with anxiety about going back to healthcare professionals as I am scared they will judge and avoid caring for me due to my mental health issues. I have lost trust in the NHS system after this experience.

Dear Lola558

Thank you for sharing your experience following your visit to the Emergency Department at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. We’re very sorry to hear that you felt judged and unsupported during such a vulnerable time. No one should feel dismissed or devalued when seeking help. We understand how important it is for staff to approach patients experiencing mental health distress with compassion, respect, and sensitivity. Your feedback highlights areas where we must do better, and we are grateful that you’ve taken the time to share it.

We also want to gently urge you to seek help whenever you need it. If you're ever unsure where to turn, please consider reaching out to your GP, NHS 24 on 111, or mental health support services such as Breathing Space (0800 83 85 87) or Samaritans (116 123).

We’re pleased to hear that once you moved to the ward, you received kind and attentive care, particularly from the student nurse. We would be grateful if you could let us know which ward you were in so that we can share this feedback with the staff.

Thank you
