"Admission and care"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Emergency Department Daisy Hill Hospital / Stroke Unit (Level 4) Southern Health & Social Care Trust / Urgent Care Centre (Phone First)

(as a carer),

My mother is in her 80s and was asked to attend the urgent care unit in Daisy Hill Newry. After observations and a blood test results she was informed that she would need to be admitted. She had been in the urgent care unit from 14:15 then had to go to A&E start another process of onboarding. This took onto 12:00 the following day but waiting 22 hours for a hospital bed is totally unacceptable.

My Mother walked into the hospital and within those 22 hours could not walk. I feel this says a lot for the state of the NHS! To add also when she did arrive on the ward there was a person who had also been in the A&E department from the previous day and couldn't believe that my mother was only brought onto the ward 22 hours later. The reason given was no available beds when the person who had recognized my Mother told us they were in the 4-bed ward all night on their own. Doesn't add up and doesn't make sense.

My opinion is that there is a complete lack of discipline in the NHS and I can tell this just by looking at the car parking outside. How does that tell you I can hear you say. Well if no one is bothered by what is happening outside the main building then that tells me that no one is bothered inside either.

This event is not isolated as the same thing happened to my father 12 months ago in the same hospital who had a stroke and had 3 falls within 9 days on the ward!

Good afternoon papaby85 – thank you so much for sharing this feedback with us.

I want to sincerely apologise for the extended wait your mother experienced before being transferred to an inpatient bed. 22 hours is far longer than anyone should have to endure. Sadly this experience is becoming more common as Emergency departments face daily overcrowding and the continuing high demand for hospital beds.

In relation to the issue regarding car parking, unfortunately this is outside my control, however we have shared your story with the appropriate staff.

Again, I am truly sorry for the length of your Mum’s stay in the ED and I can fully appreciate how difficult this would have been for her and for you as well.

With kind regards Lisa Small
