"A lively delivery of expertise, empathy, inclusion and humour"

About: Cannock Chase Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a carer),

Attending ‘Joint School’ with my partner, who is due for hip surgery shortly, I had no great expectations. I’d massively underestimated the commitment, professionalism and expertise demonstrated so ably by Kirsty, Sian and the team who delivered information and reassurance in equal measure.

Seeing the joint model, examining the replacement joint, finding out about bone donation were all particularly interesting and helpful as was having clear information about what the medical team do and - most importantly - the patient’s role/responsibilities before, during and after surgery to promote faster recovery. I was surprised by how much can and should be done by the patient themselves and how much of that seems obvious when you know but had truly not occurred to many of us before.

The physio's information and physical demonstration of exercises was clear and good and the opportunity to be fitted with crutches, taught how to use them and given them to take home and practice in the home environment to become familiar with using them in all areas is invaluable.

A lively delivery of expertise, empathy, inclusion and humour, this all feels to me like a ground-breaking service that can only improve patient awareness, confidence and recovery. Just brilliant!  Absolutely would recommend.
