My daughter was referred to dermatology on an urgent referral, with pictures that our own Doctor sent in Oct 2024 as her eczema was so severe. She had to take 2 months off work as her condition was so debilitating. It affects her whole body and when its at is worst due to the lack of moisture in her skin she is in constant pain/irritation and movement causes her skin to crack even more. She is unable to sleep, and her hair and eyebrows are falling out.
At roughly the same time she was referred to ophthalmology due to a condition in her eyes caused by eczema (Keratoconus), she was seen by ophthalmology in December and was to return in three months where they would probably book her in for surgery due to the severity of her loss of sight in one eye. Due to appointments being cancelled by the hospital she wasn't seen again until Aug 2025 by a different consultant who would not give her a treatment plan as he did not see her originally. We are now back to the start of the process with ophthalmology nearly a year down the line with her eyesight deteriorating and the cause of the problem eczema not being treated or controlled affectively.
She has been seen by a private doctor who confirms that her condition is chronic and that she will probably need immunotherapy. The only treatment that they can offer her is photo therapy (3 times a week) which is over 40 miles away and due her work and cost of this treatment it is not a viable option for her.
She has recently had to sign herself off work again as she is unable to move without it causing her severe pain and making her condition worse. We have followed this up with our GP but she already down as an urgent referral with dermatology (which has nearly been a year since her referral). The only treatment available from our GP is emollients and steroids which have little affect and are not a long-term treatment plan which she needs.
For any person to be left in this miserable and painful situation which is affecting her whole life is not acceptable. Her health is deteriorating, in particular her eyesight which is of great concern and her mental health is now suffering along with the worry she may lose her employment due to her sick record.
