About: Paediatrics / Paediatric Day Surgery Unit

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was admitted for a planned procedure.

Some feedback we would like to share is while in all it was a good experience we would like to share some feedback for the future.

While on paper a child, nursing staff would do well to adjust their manner for older children. My daughter who is in her teens was treated the same as a 6 year old on the ward. While no direct problem it was a little condescending for her as she was treated in a very infantile way.

Staff asked her what she wanted to eat in a sandwich after, then proceeded to give her lunch request to another patient meaning she didnt have the good she ordered which while my daughter was understanding, it only happened because another staff member gave the sandwich as a second helping to the child opposite. This meant my child who suffers from IBS was left with a cheese sandwich that had given her stomach ache over night.

Nursing staff on the ward need to be monitoring patients and visitors for inconsiderate behaviours and bringing this to their attention. It was not a relaxing post recovery with neighbouring parentts shouting on the phone and children misbehaving letting themselves into our closed curtains and being loud and inconsiderate when the staff allowed this to happen.

As for theatre staff this was absolutely fantastic but the nurses on the ward do need feedback.

Dear cgol9688,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback with us following your daughter’s recent stay. We’re really pleased to hear that the theatre team made a great impression — we’ll make sure your kind words are passed on to them.

We are sorry to hear that some parts of the ward experience didn’t go as smoothly. We really appreciate your comments about how older children are spoken to, the mix-up with her lunch, and the noisy environment. These are important points, and we’ll be sharing them with the team to help us improve how we care for patients and support families.

We always aim to provide a calm, respectful and age-appropriate environment for all children and young people, and your feedback helps us reflect on how we can do better.

We’d really like to chat this through further if you’re happy to — please feel free to get in touch with me directly.

Warm regards,
Angela Giles
