During my daughter’s admission for high temperature the staff in the Children’s ward were friendly and supportive. The medical staff were attentive and explained everything clearly. The nursing staff were very friendly and approachable, when I asked for support or where things were kept eg formula/nappies they helped show me and offered to get me anything when coming into the room to do observations/ medications etc. The few things that I struggled with was the furniture- there was no where designated to change a nappy apart from the cot which didn’t seem very hygienic and a few times unavoidable the sheets got wet and needed changed. Also the chair in the room was a “patient chair” however trying to feed my baby in it was very uncomfortable for us both and resulted in me getting a sore shoulder/back which I didn’t need when looking after an unwell child. The staff were not able to offer any alternatives and I wondered who is indeed in charge of these areas of patients room as I don’t think I would be the only parent to struggle with this. Also during my whole admission of 48 hrs in the side room it was cleaned once by domestic staff- the bins didn’t get emptied or the floors mopped or surfaces wiped- again I would suspect in a hospital setting this would not be beneficial to infection control. Thankfully this did not affect my daughters recovery and she was discharged as planned.
