"Rude staff member"

About: New Victoria Hospital / Minor injuries unit

(as a relative),

I attended minor injuries recently with my partner who had fallen and injured his wrist and ankle.  The wait time was fair, just over an hour’s wait, as there were ~6people in waiting room

The ANPs were pleasant and were thorough in their assessment and management plan.

There was one staff member who I found to be abrupt towards myself upon two occasions for no reason.

First time, I was bringing my partner back from X-ray in the wheelchair and was pushing him forwards, with no issues.  This staff member tells me it’s easier to pull the chair backwards. I said we were fine and nearly back to the waiting bay. They then grabbed the chair from me and spun the wheelchair round and insisted I pull the wheelchair backwards.

My second encounter with this staff member was when they had to apply a backslab to my partner’s wrist. As soon as we entered the plaster room I was asked asked to stand back from the bed. I did as instructed.

I stood waiting to take my partners hoodie from him before the cast was applied and was told to sit down, I said I was waiting for him to take his hoodie off. They then told me that I was intimidating standing there.

I was taken aback from this comment as I was standing there minding my own business on my phone. The only interaction I had with this person in the plaster room, was saying I was waiting for his hoodie.

I found this behaviour rude and unprofessional. I didn’t challenge it as I didn’t want matters to escalate further.

I also didn’t highlight the behaviour to the staff in charge as we were leaving for the QE for further assessment.

We left feeling bewildered and disappointed with our patient experience.

Dear aprilsh63,

Thank you for sharing your recent experience attending the New Victoria Minor Injury Unit, I’m pleased to hear that our Advanced Nurse Practitioners were thorough and pleasant in their assessment and management, and that the wait time was reasonable. However, I’m truly sorry that you encountered behaviour from a staff member that felt abrupt and unprofessional. This is not the standard of care we aim to provide and I understand how upsetting it must have been—especially when you were simply trying to support your partner.

Care opinion doesn't share personal details- if you would like to email me direct at Karen.hughes10@nhs.scot with your name and date of attendance I will look into this further, in the meantime please accept my sincere apologies for the distress caused. Your feedback has been shared with the relevant team so that we can reflect on what happened and ensure that all staff interactions are respectful, supportive, and sensitive to the needs of patients and their relatives.

Wishing your partner a smooth recovery, and thank you again for bringing this to our attention.

With kind regards,

Karen
