I write on behalf of our family to express serious concern regarding the care of our mother whilst she was a patient on Ward 31 at Victoria Hospital following a hip fracture.
In her late 80s, our mother is a fit, active individual who has enjoyed a high quality of life and independence. But by day four of her injury, her surgery has yet to be carried out. On a daily basis since her injury, our mother has been prepared and fasted for surgery, only to be later advised it would not be taking place. On one of these occasions, this was only communicated to her via a request by a staff member to complete a menu given her surgery would not be taking place. This is not an acceptable example of good communication or patient involvement in care. We became increasingly distressed by the lack of progress and believe it was an unacceptable and inhumane response to an injury of this nature.
We are aware that delays in surgery for hip fractures can significantly impact recovery outcomes — increasing the risk of unnecessary decline, longer hospital stays, complications, and ultimately reducing the chances of regaining mobility and independence. We could already see that this delay, at 4 days, was beginning to negatively impact her condition and wellbeing and could seriously compromise her return to the active lifestyle she previously enjoyed.
Additionally, we were concerned about her pain management. There were repeated delays between her requesting additional pain relief and the actual administration of it. On at least one occasion, it was not given at all. Given the nature of her injury and circumstance of her delayed surgery, we do not feel this is acceptable. Whilst we understand the nursing team is under pressure with many competing demands, this delay in managing her pain is further compromising her comfort and overall wellbeing. There were also conflicting explanations regarding the option of a nerve block to manage her pain whilst in the ward, although this did appear to be resolved. This sequence of events has left us with serious concerns about the coordination of her care and pain management plan.
We would be grateful if this matter could be brought to the attention of those people in authority as a matter of urgency.
We appreciate the hard work of the team under challenging circumstances, but we hope you understand our distress and the need for timely action.
