"Overwhelmed at the care service I have received"

About: Ninewells Hospital / General Surgery Ninewells Hospital / Trauma & Orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I fell whilst on holiday abroad and broke my hip. Didn't know it at the time & continued to hobble about for a week or so. Returning home, I realised it was not improving pain wise. Got an x-ray and was immediately admitted to hospital (Ninewells).

This is where I feel the need to share my experience - I know it is not as life threatening or even harrowing as other submissions but I still consider my experience worthy of the appreciation of all staff I encountered.

Admitted on a Wednesday; operated on next day; released on the Friday  with all necessary drugs/paraphernalia etc.

I had never been in hospital in my entire life (70 years) & this was my 1st ever operation. I state clearly that from clocking in & clocking out at Ninewells hospital I was given the best care, information and assurance to the point that there were no questions left to ask.

I would summarise by stating that I was both surprised (my ignorance) and humbly privileged at what I thought would be a traumatic experience.

The care and attentive support continued to my surprise after I was discharged. This materialised on a daily basis through phone calls from follow up care support who asked how I was faring and did I need anything.

I will state clearly here as a person who has never been in such a situation before and thinks himself to be invincible -these daily calls were a godsend - I did not consider myself dying but for the 1st time in my life I felt vulnerable (without mobility) & although I set myself to tough it out, I realised from the 1st phone call that there was help there if I needed it.

Reassurance like phone any time, tell us what you need, did your medicine arrive on time?

I am overwhelmed at the care service I have received and would like it recorded as such.

Thank You

Thank you for taking the time to share such a positive experience with us. I am sure it must have been a very scary time for you undergoing surgery to repair your fractured hip. It is really encouraging that the staff looking after you were able to support you through your journey providing you with the information required to alleviate any fears. This is exactly the standard of care that we strive to achieve. I will share your feedback with the teams involved, I am sure they will be delighted. I hope that you are making good progress in your rehabilitation and I wish you well
