I attended an ENT appointment at University Hospital Wishaw to get help for my progressive low frequency hearing loss, only to be told that since I can technically hear average speech frequencies I can't get hearing aids. I clearly told the doctor that I've been nearly hit by cars since I can't hear the engine noises, that I have a hard time understanding speech, and that I have post concussion syndrome causing my ears to ring all of the time which my GP completely ignores.
They tested my hearing and the doctor told me it was normal for my age. I'm in my early 30s and my audiogram was not normal for my age. I was also told I can't take a photo of my audiogram, and while I accept this could be an NHS policy I disagree with the fact that have to jump through so many hoops to access my own health records.
I have to go private now and spend thousands of pounds to feel safe with traffic and understand speech properly, and wait for my progressive hearing loss to reach the level the NHS feels appropriate to address. I am thoroughly disappointed with the whole ordeal, and dread going to the ENT department in the future because of feeling neglected and ignored during this visit.
