"Our Family’s Fight for Urgent ADHD Support"

About: Children & Young People Physical Health / Rotherham Children's Neuro Development Service

(as a parent/guardian),

We’re sharing this not for sympathy, but because we’re exhausted, frightened, and desperate for change.

Our 8-year-old child was recently diagnosed privately with combined ADHD. They already have an NHS diagnosis of autism with demand avoidance and hyperactivity (February 2024). We’ve spent years battling for support, funding private CBT courses, assessments, and psychological input, all of which point to one clear conclusion: medication is likely the only intervention that can help.

Despite this, we’ve been told it could take up to eight months before the NHS ADHD pathway even considers medication. Eight months of waiting while our child deteriorates daily.

Their mental health is in crisis. They regularly say they wish they weren’t alive. This is part of a heartbreaking pattern that’s consuming our family.

Their behaviour is volatile and aggressive. Every day we face biting, kicking, punching, hair-pulling, spitting, and verbal abuse. These actions cause physical harm bruises are now a daily occurrence. Their strength, for an eight-year-old, is frightening. We are bruised, physically and emotionally. They are demand avoidant to nearly every task, and their reactions are explosive. We live in a constant state of alert, trying to keep them safe and protect ourselves.

We’ve reached out to CAMHS, pleaded for an expedited review, and were told the process cannot be fast-tracked for anyone. But how can a child in this state not be considered a priority?

We understand the pressures on the system. We know there are many families in need. But we also know our child is in crisis and waiting eight months is not just unreasonable, it’s unsafe.

We’re sharing this to raise awareness, to advocate for our child, and to ask: how many more families are living like this? How many children are being left to suffer because the system cannot respond quickly enough?

We’re doing everything we can. But we need help. We need someone to listen. We need someone to act.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience via Care Opinion. I truly appreciate your openness, and I want to acknowledge the challenges you’ve been facing. As we’ve discussed privately, I continue to sympathise with your situation and fully recognise that the current waiting times are far from acceptable. Please be assured that we are working hard to reduce these delays, and we have noted your request for an expedited appointment. If we are able to offer an earlier slot, we will contact you without hesitation.

I understand how important timely support is, and while ADHD medication can be beneficial for many children and young people, it’s also important to recognise that it may not always provide the immediate relief families are hoping for.

I know you’ve already explored other avenues, and I’m sorry to hear that these haven’t been successful. I’d like to repeat our offer of emotional regulation sessions with our team while you wait. These can be a helpful support in the interim, and if you’d like to pursue this option, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

In addition, there are other services that may be able to offer support:

Rotherham Early Help: Early Help Website or call MASH on 01709 336080 (Option 2) Rotherham Parent Carer Forum: Website or call 01709 296262 Young Minds: Free and confidential mental health support for young people – Website or call 0808 802 5544 Rotherham SENDIASS: https://www.rotherhamsendiass.org.uk/support

If at any point you have concerns about your child’s safety or if they are at immediate risk of harm to themselves or others, please consider A&E or contact the childrens Crisis Team on 03000 218 996.

I’m truly sorry that we’re not yet in a position to offer a confirmed medication appointment, but please know that we are doing everything we can to improve access and reduce waiting times. As soon as an appointment becomes available, we will be in touch.

Kind regards,
Caroline Jefferies
