"Waiting for an operation"

About: Bradford Royal Infirmary / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Waiting for a knee operation for a few months now, 6 or more , when I suddenly receive a text message from the Bradford Royal Infirmary asking if am still waiting to be seen? Don't the orthopaedic department know what is happening with their patients? It goes on to say would you like to be seen ,as far as am aware you're supposed to be next contacting me when you're going to do the operation, It doesn't give me much confidence in this establishment if you can't even keep track of what is happening with your patients.

Dear Leonard

My name is Catherine and part of my role is responding to posts on Care Opinion.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback, I understand your confusion in being asked if you are still waiting to be seen.

I have shared your feedback with the Orthopaedic Surgical Team today and I am awaiting some feedback as to why patients are sent this type of text.

I will respond again once they have replied - possibly this could be a way of assessing the correct numbers on the waiting list as occasionally patients may choose to have their surgery privately.

I am due to be away from work until Tuesday 30th September so will be able to further update you then.

If you would like us to look into this for you, please contact our Patient Experience Service (PALS) with your details on 01274 364810 or by emailing patient.experience@bthft.nhs.uk.

As a Trust we strive to provide a high level of care and patient well being and value all feedback, positive or negative, as a way to drive improvements to our services.

Kind regards

Catherine Healy

Dear Leonard

The General Manager has responded to your enquiry:

"All elective patients waiting for any treatment are contacted periodically via automated text asking if they still require treatment. This applies to all specialties. It is not a reflection on our process for how we track patients. We often find that patients have gone privately in that time and don’t require to still be on our waiting list, or that they are unwell due to another condition that would prevent their surgery from going ahead."

"The average wait time for a hip/knee replacement currently is 50-weeks."

I hope this helps explain why you received such a text and the update on the current waiting time for your procedure will give you some guide as to when it is likely to take place.

Kind regards

Catherine Healy
