"Passed from pillar to post"

About: Sexual Health Services - North Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (Open Clinic)

(as a service user),

I had an implant fitted by a lovely staff member in Stafford on a Tue, but simply due to luck it hit a nerve & bruised v badly, unusual for me as had 2/3 prior no issues, nurse wasn’t at fault was just bad luck where it landed. I called to try to go bk to get it removed was advised no appts in any clinic within 1 hr of my address id have to go to Meir drop in which was open on the Fri, I got there 1 hr before drop in ended waited 20 mins then told by a staff member rather sternly there was no space that id have to go or a&e call my gp or go to Burton drop in on Mon morn despite explaining the pain i was in was given shrugged shoulders and an eye roll & sent on my way rather unhelpfully!

I Rang my gp adv no appts with them sadly for another mth or more best bet A&E or Burton drop in but they were very apologetic. I went to Burton mon morn early, very busy, saw the same staff member at BP screening, who then said I could have gone to Stafford this morn which was frustrating as they didn’t advise this on fri when this was my closest clinic and where I went initially for fitment!

I said you could have said this Fri as id have gone there, never mind, waited & was seen by a another member of staff who gave advice & decided to wait a little longer to heal before potentially removing it but they did offer this as an option or to come bk which I decided to do in a weeks time but again will have to wait in drop in despite having some nerve pain with this as can’t bk appointments despite this being an unusual after procedure issue.

I decided against removal bc clinician preferred to remove near site of incision which was close to where the nerve pain is so decided I’d prefer to wait a little longer for it to heal more before adding anymore trauma to the area which we agreed on. Initial after appointments for when implants go wrong should surely be offered esp had I been in more severe pain which I assume is exactly the same pathway that I experienced!

A&E isn’t a very helpful option for very busy working professionals with children who don’t have time to sit in A&E for over 6+ hrs with no local family support either! I felt

I was passed from pillar to post and I found the 1st staff member I encounted to be most obstructive in manner. I hope this review will be considered re there being no clear pathway after medical complications, the aftercare service clearly lacked any professional or helpful co-ordination leaving me in limbo and without adequate or helpful support. I would recommend the service reviews their processes for managing complications, to ensure patients have access to a clear structured pathway of follow up in these instances, rather than being redirected from one drop in clinic to another where there is no guarantees of being seen and having to wait with those less urgent cases when this was clearly not a routine follow up!

A clear escalation pathway for cases like mine should be reviewed! I’d appreciate a response on this please also?
