"No answer at maternity"

About: Maternity care / Maternity Assesment/Triage

(as a service user),

I was unable to contact maternity assessment, option 6.

I was worried about reduced movements in my 36 week pregnancy & called numerous times. The call was just ringing out each time.

I would expect this number to be manned at all times & I felt quite concerned that it clearly was not.

As this is the number I will call to alert the home birth team that I am in labour, I’m now quite worried that it will be difficult to get through.

Dear Concerned Patient 6,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience, and I’m truly sorry to hear about the difficulty you had reaching our maternity assessment unit—especially during such a worrying time in your pregnancy.

We understand how distressing it must have been to call repeatedly without getting through, particularly when you were concerned about reduced movements. Please accept our sincere apologies for the anxiety this caused.

Our phone lines can be extremely busy at times, and while this is never an excuse, it does mean that calls may take a time to be answered. We are actively working to improve this service, including reviewing staffing and call-handling processes, to ensure that every call is answered promptly—especially for urgent concerns like yours.

Your feedback is incredibly valuable, and we want to reassure you that we are taking steps to make sure the line is reliable when you need to contact Maternity Triage. If you have any further concerns or would like to speak with someone directly, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Best wishes

Gaynor
