"Their knowledge and care felt so personal"

About: District Nursing / Omagh

(as a carer),

My father was sent home due to no longer being able to receive treatment for his cancer. We had experiences within the hospital environment that lead me and my family to feel very over protective of my dad.

When the nurses first came to our home, I made sure I was with the nurses, they were kind to allow me to understand what they were going to do etc. my father knew his diagnosis and didn’t want to know his prognosis but unfortunately this didn’t happen within the hospital setting. I advised the nurses my father wants to just take life one day at a time. They came in each day and showed him so much respect. Lisa in particular not only listened to my dad but also listened to how we were feeling as a family and always spoke to my dad like he was still living and not dying. She would come each day with a big smile and listen to his wee stories and always made sure he was listened to.

My father was admitted to the hospital again for a short time and asked me had Lisa called to the house and I explained she wouldn’t call when your not there. That’s how much of a bond and care he felt and that made the experience a lot less scary and as a family we didn’t feel as anxious and we didn’t feel on our own, as other people cared about my dad too.

District nurses are so valuable within the Community and when you need them their knowledge and care felt so personal. They were my fathers earth angels and Lisa in particular as from the first day she met my father you could see how she instantly cared and pushed for the best comfort for my dad from other departments and ideas to help make his life much easier. I can’t thank the girls enough for taking care of my dad so well.

Good evening Sarahc87,

Thank you for taking the time to pen such heartfelt and kind comments about our fabulous District Nursing team in Omagh. I will be delighted to share these sentiments with the team, and in particular with Lisa who your dad seems to have built up such a great bond with.

Feedback like this is such a lovely boost and so encouraging for our teams to read knowing they are doing their very best, the ultimate outcome being in improving the way they care for their patient.

I am glad the service our Omagh District Nursing team provided has been a positive one and I sincerely hope going forward you will be able to lean on this to carry you through any difficult days.
