"Total knee replacement"

About: Bideford Hospital / Therapies North Devon District Hospital / General surgery North Devon District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was admitted in August at NDDH for TKR. The procedure was done well. Team was brilliant. The aftercare in hospital was also brilliant.

The one thing that could be better is the physio instructions given to take home as they are too vague.

My physio appointment at Bideford Hospital a few days later was a waste of time. They didn’t assess it or even look at my knee and basically said to follow the instructions given by the hospital. I did show them how vague they were but they didn’t see the problem.

My next appointment is not until October, which I feel is a long time without any guidance on what I am supposed to be doing. This could be a factor in slowing down my recovery.

This would be so frustrating having waited so long to have the operation in the first place I wanted to do all that I could to help my recovery. Most people that had theirs done at the same time are having frequent physio.

Dear septembertt46,

Thank you for taking the time to post your response following your total knee replacement surgery with us on Jubilee ward.

I am delighted to hear that the procedure was done well, the team was brilliant and also the aftercare in hospital was the same.

I am so sorry to hear that you found the physio instructions too vague. We have the paper exercises and also an app where you would be advised on the exercises post surgery. I am not sure which version you were given. I can pass on your concerns to the physiotherapy team, if you could give me a call on Monday I can try to see if there is anything else we can do for you.

Everyone on the Orthopaedic Team strive to make our patients stay and recovery as comfortable and reassuring as possible.

I will pass on your lovely words to the team.

Kind regards,

Ana-Maria Bacsik

Senior Staff Nurse

Jubilee ward

Dear septembertt46,

Thank you for sending in this feedback about your experiences after having your knee replaced.

I'm sorry to hear that your post operative rehabilitation has not met your expectations. I am one of the Senior Physiotherapists based at Bideford Hospital and if beneficial I would be more than happy to discuss this with you?

If you would like to have a chat or an appointment with me then please call the Physiotherapy Outpatient admin team on 01271 322378 who can help organise this.
