On walking through the doors of Oncology Department, wether it be the lovely friendly receptionists who warmly greet you or the volunteer ladies who ask if you would like a wee cuppa whilst you waiting to see either your consultant, Breast Care Nurse, Oncology Pharmacist or waiting to go round to the ward for your chemo, they all go the extra mile as you are sitting there stressed to the max. When you go round to the ward your Staff Nurse ask would you like a bed or chair. Once you are settled in your chair they explain what will happen wether it’s your first chemo or second last chemo, they always ask how are you and if you have had any side affects which I have & you say oh a wee red rash on back off my hands , they look at your hands and then by the next chemo you have a prescription for the rash.
Chris who is a Staff Nurse said about cotton gloves on during the night as I said how in the morning the skin in my hands feel tight, Chris went the extra mile and showed me them on his phone (work related) so I ordered them when I went home & they came next day what a difference they have made to my hands. From Paula the Charge Nurse to the domestics who come round at lunchtime if you are there when it’s lunchtime & ask would you like some lunch, they all make you part of their ward family. You are not just a patient they get to know you and you get to know them and have a banter with the staff. I have listened to them as they are the professionals, they have made my journey more bearable I can’t thank them enough they are such an amazing team and make you feel at ease as you don’t know what to expect when you first go round to the ward or what will happen but as I said they explain it all to you and if you are still not sure wether it’s when you have to take meds home with you they will explain it all over again.
