"She was made to feel relaxed and was their only focus."

About: Mater Hospital / Elective Overnight stay centre (EOSC)

(as a parent/guardian),

I attended the Elective Overnight Stay Centre with my 23 year old daughter who has learning disabilities and medical issues. Two consultants were doing surgery at the same time whilst she was in theatre.

One consultant Hanna from renal unit in City hospital came over to remove line/cording in neck from a previous dialysis line, and consultant Susan was doing hernia repair.

My daughter had a Hospital Passport and I have to say that ALL the medical staff took the time to read it on the system and made it very clear to me that they knew all about Megan’s needs and special requests concerning especially medical procedures, me being with her, even in theatre until she was put asleep, playing Nathan Carter music and having me there when she woke up in recovery. Emma the anaesthetist took time to chat to Megan at her bedside in the ward and again played Nathan Carter music whilst she accommodated Megan’s request to get the cannula in whilst still on the ward and not prior to going into theatre.

Megan was getting home after her procedures but I took her to the bathroom and she came over hot, nauseous and very pale, her vitals went slightly off. The staff agreed with Megan that she would be better to stay overnight and the Doctor ?Matthew agreed that after he checked her over.

All the staff were fantastic in the EOSC centre, some names which come to mind are; the 2 Lynsey’s, Mary & Sweet Mary, Deet, Christina, Sindhu and the nurse on night duty Judith who was particularly attentive to Megan throughout the night as I went home.

Overall I could not say one negative word about the EOSC unit and the care my daughter received.

The only negative would be nothing to do with the ward or staff, it would be that there was no facility for buying a hot drink or even a biscuit after 4pm. There was only a vending machine containing cold drinks.

But as for everything else I again reiterate that it was a 100% positive experience for not just myself but for my daughter and although it was a very busy ward , she was made to feel very relaxed and their only focus. Can’t praise them enough. Thank you.

Dear leopardee46

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a comprehensive review on your experience as a carer and Megan's experience as a patient whilst in the Elective Overnight Stay centre.

As the Service Manager responsible for the unit it is lovely to hear that the staff both in the ward and theatres took the time to understand Megan's needs and provided such personalised care to Megan.

I will make sure that your story is shared with all the team and specifically the names you have mentioned, they will be delighted to know that they were able to make a difference.

I hope that Megan is continuing to recover well.

I will also pass on your comments to the service manager for the Mater site around the lack of facilities to buy a hot drink or snack after 4pm.

Best Wishes,

Sharon
