"fluid build up"

About: Older People’s Services / Hospital at Home Northern Sector

(as a relative),

There was a problem after leaving 2 week stay in hospital. Fluid build up in legs and feet and feeling breathless.

The team were amazing from start to finish. Their positivity was infectious and gave my husband confidence in the care he received. He was first visited by Doctor and two nurses having been referred by GP . Hospital doctor was well informed of my husband’s medical history and immediately set about giving him intravenous medication as this would work faster than tablet form to remove fluid build up. Every process was explained .They also used a defibrillator to ease his breathing and showed him how and when to use same. I was given a document to monitor his fluid intake and output each day , to be shown to those who called each day. He couldn’t praise the staff enough for their attention over the 2/3 days that they visited our home to monitor progress.

This is a great service as it prevented another visit to A & E and perhaps another admission to hospital which would have been stressful for him .

As a result his breathing is more stable , no further need for defibrillator and with prescription for diuretic tablets going forward, swelling in legs and feet have disappeared.

Thank you for your positive feedback.

The team always aim to prevent admission to hospital or reduce their stay where possible.

Shortness of breath with fluid built up can have a big impact or both mobility and general health therefore removing the fluids can significantly improve health.

The nebuliser left with your husband would have certainly helped with his shortness of breath along with the medications given for reduction of fluid. We always find the monitoring of the fluid intake from family a great help in the indication of loss of body fluid.

I will pass on your feedback to all your staff.

King regards
