I had a pacemaker implanted over 17 years ago and since then have had three replacements. Over the time I have had problems with the leads and have had two of them replaced but not removed. My last but one pacemaker replacement was in October 2024 and I experienced a lot of swelling and soreness around the site. In January 2025 I began to feel unwell with loss of weight, skeletal pains in the back and chest, night sweats and extreme and uncomfortable cold shivers. I underwent many tests and scans and eventually I was diagnosed with endocarditis in April 2025. I spent 7 weeks in hospital on intravenous antibiotics and then another 2 weeks supported by the intravenous Home Support Service. Unfortunately the infection was on the pacemaker leads and the antibiotics could not remove the infection.
Initially the hospital had been reluctant to remove the leads and pacemaker. There were 4 leads in situ 2 of which had been there for 17 years, and one of the others for about 7 years. They felt that there was a high risk in carrying out an attempted removal, as this could lead to damage to the veins with serious consequences. In the event there was no alternative.
In June 2025 I was transferred for Salford to Wythenshawe under the care of Dr Skene. Fortunately, I had found a ‘Miracle Worker’ who successfully completed the procedure without any complications whatsoever; then in the course of time implanted a new pacemaker and leads. I was very worried and concerned prior to my treatment but I needn’t have been as I was in the hands of a very skilful and experienced surgeon.
I have had no after affects from my treatment and will always be grateful to Dr Skene for taking on the task.
