"I didn't feel listened to nor cared for"

About: Derriford Hospital

(as the patient),

I attended Derriford Hospital bleeding heavily. I was within a room in the children’s ward after bloods and iv attachments. I was seen by a male gynaecologist which I was uncomfortable with at the age of 15.

My time on the high dependency ward I felt like I was left with people not making many decisions especially within the seriousness of my condition being 3 litres of blood down. I laid bawling my eyes out for pain killers which were directly next to me in a cabinet and didn’t receive them until 20 minutes later. I asked to go to the toilet, but I was left with no support from any doctors while experiencing huge anaemia. I stood up and fainted upon the blood loss and regained consciousness to a doctor/nurse shouting at me for getting up to go to the toilet although I had received no help in doing so. Decisions were made very last minute about surgery and blood transfusion. I have an extreme fear of needles and felt completely ignored being pinned and having a needle into my hand.

With my life being on the line and having been very close to losing my life that day the way I had been treated and the rate decisions were made I didn’t feel listened to nor cared for.
