"Lack of patient confidentiality"

About: Milton Keynes Hospital

(as the patient),

I was shown to a changing 'room', a curtained area at the end of a long hallway and waiting area. I was sat in my gown waiting for an MRI - the delightful radiologist was inserting a cannula - she had explained what would be happening and asked if I had questions. She was professional and clear so I felt confident in her care.

Then another radiologist came and stood next to her - I had no idea why, they simply looked at the ceiling and around the room. I asked them their name and then asked why they were there. They replied to learn how to insert a cannula! Also as this was happening, another staff member pulled back the curtain and dashed through pushing a fire exit door open to seek a colleague - a second staff member came through also seeking the colleague - then three came back through the tiny changing room- no privacy - I could have still be changing into my gown!

I then waited - all was quiet, then another radiologist came to question a male patient in the waiting area - next to me, asking him person medical questions about his prostrate, urine etc. I really didn't want to know and found it deeply embarrassing. Later a radiologist came to speak to a female patient - where she was forced to talk about her breasts and the implants she had! When I was asked medical questions I replied quietly - and I was lucky in that no one was waiting near me. No privacy or dignity.

Incidentally, I returned the following week for a further scan requiring a cannula to be inserted. The same member of staff came and stood beside the radiologist inserting the cannula, again they did not introduce themself or state why they were there and again just looked over their shoulder, at the ceiling etc. I talked to them and they laughed as they remembered me from the previous week - I pointed out that all staff members are expected to introduce themselves to patients.

Poor standards, poor training and supervision, lack of patient confidentiality and no dignity.
