"I did not feel adequately supported"

About: The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Maternity care (wards 68, 72 &73)

(as the patient),

I am writing to share my recent experience at Glasgow Royal Maternity Hospital, following my induction and subsequent care from end of Aug to early September

Key Points of Feedback are:

•Pain Relief: Pain relief was inconsistent, often delayed, and sometimes dismissed, causing unnecessary suffering.

•Support: I did not feel adequately supported, especially during periods of distress and pain.

•Communication: Communication from staff was poor, particularly regarding procedures, delays, and test results.

•Environment: The ward environment was noisy and poorly controlled, with visiting hours not enforced and disruptive behaviour tolerated.

•Staff Attitude: Some staff were rude and dismissive, which added to the stress of the experience.

•Procedures: Some procedures did not seem appropriate or respectful.

•Pathways: Some pathways chosen do not seem appropriate.

•Follow-up Care: Delays and confusion in follow-up care, including test results and medication, led to further distress.

•Positive Note: Certain staff provided excellent care, treating me with respect and dignity. Some of the midwives in particular were a credit to the hospital, and the decision making and professionalism from one of the doctors was greatly appreciated.

It would be good if someone from the hospital could reach out to allow me to provide more detailed information in a more suitable way.

Dear Mexidfal612,

We appreciate you getting in touch and providing your thoughts. I'm sorry to hear that your experience fell well short of the level of care we aim to deliver. I would be more than pleased to investigate this further on your behalf. Please contact me using the email address below so that we may look into this more and attempt to make the necessary changes.

Kind Regards,

Tracy Orr
