"Extremely grateful to everyone involved"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Emergency department Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response

(as a relative),

My brother-in-law and two adult nieces were involved in a three-car pile-up . There were 4 ambulance and two fire crews and several police crews on the scene. I attended with family as soon as we could, from the time we arrived we could see the excellent care everyone was having and that emergency services were in control. Throughout the time at the scene emergency services still had time to be polite whilst dealing with what to me was horrific .

I followed one ambulance to Altnagelvin hospital and by the time I got parked they already had my brother-in-law in and hooked up to monitors. My nieces followed in another ambulance., I didn’t know that the ambulance crew stay with you until dedicated Doctors and Nurses are available. The  ambulance crew kept checking vitals and feeding information to Factors and Nurses.

This isn’t a job to these people, what I witnessed in A&E goes way beyond any job, the care and dedication shown by everyone we came in contact with, those who were involved with other patients were happy to answer questions, point us in a direction and help.

We were in A&E for 11 hours and it took every minute of that time and care to help my family, bloods, scans ,

X-rays , pain management all taken care of with a smile and dedication . When they were released we were confident they could manage at home with the pain relief they were provided with . Thankfully for us there were no breaks or life changing harm . I am extremely grateful to everyone involved and cannot praise them high enough.

Good morning Nev1234,

My name is Maggie Hamilton, I am the Experience and Involvement officer for Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. Firstly thank you for taking the time to leave your experience of the service.

It is lovely to hear how you felt that the emergency services were in control and still had time to be polite whilst dealing with what to you was horrific. The ambulance crew stay and monitor patients at A&E until a handover with A&E staff is complete. As an organisation we are committed to consistently show compassion, professionalism, and respect for the patients we care for.

I would like to share your feedback with the clinicians who attended to your family on the day and in order to locate them I would require the following information:

-Date and approximate time of the incident

-The address/area the ambulance was dispatched to

If you are happy to share this information, I can be contacted at: Maggie.hamilton@nias.hscni.net

I hope your brother-in-law and nieces are recovering well.

Kind regards,

Maggie
